Israel has a large Bedouin population, totaling 180,000. The vast majority of these nomadic and semi-nomadic tribes live in the Negev desert, in the South of Israel. Approximately 50,000 Bedouins inhabit the Northern regions, near Syria, and another 10,000 have moved into the central areas, after droughts have made life in their desert homes unbearable. Bedouin life is not easy anywhere – there is strong pressure on the nomadic tribes to settle into more stable lives. Poverty and illiteracy are common themes among Bedouin tribes which often find themselves at the margins of society.  (More) ...
