Mikimoto’s pearl farms are located in Ago Bay, near Toba, south of Tokyo. It is the main center of pearl production in Japan. Below the bamboo trays (or these round floaters as in Photo 17), the akoyas, pearl oysters, are hung in nets or bamboo crates.
