Press Office in the Maiti Nepal headquarters in Kathmandu. A story published in the local newspapers about 29 year old girl who was mugged and raped in Rukum (western Nepal). At the Maiti Nepal headquarters they go through the local and national newspapers to find articles about rape, prostitution and other forms of violence inflicted on Nepalese children. It has been estimated that between 5,000 and l5,000 women and children are taken from Nepal to India to be exploited in the prostitution market. Many girls end up in brothels in India where they remain prisoners for many years, until they become infected with AIDS and are then left to fend for themselves. In the meantime they have to work like slaves, in unhygienic conditions, from 10 to 16 hours a day, sometimes serving more than 40 clients a day, so that they can pay the debt they incur as soon as they begin working at the brothel. Kathmandu, Nepal.
