Remains from Nazca tombs which were sacked by the âhuaquerosâ, a Spanish word for tomb raiders. The huaqueros ransacked the Huacas, or sacred places consisting of pre-Columbian cemeteries or pyramids, thus the name âhuaquerosâ. For archaeologists the work of the Huaqueros on a site means disaster, both because of the damage caused to the tombs and because of the loss of the contents contents.
Over the decades a large part of the archaeological treasures of Peru (pottery, fabrics, jewels, mummies etc.) has been stolen and often sold to foreign buyers. In l968 a law was established to forbid ceramic export and other objects of national heritage. Although this measure has gone a long way to slow down this âhaemorrhageâ, in spite of everything it still persists.
