A life Postponed Young in Transdniester Being young in Transdniester is a drag. The tiny breakaway province of Moldova is wedged between the Dniester River and Ukraine. The strip of land seems to be stuck in Soviet times with statues of Lenin and military parades filling the streets. Education is bad and unemployment is high. Mischa and Irina (kissing) want to go to America. They managed to arrange a working holiday visa for the summer. But their university director told them that they’re not allowed to continue their education if they go to the States. “They’re afraid we get indoctrinated Mischa says. Everybody wants to leave. Many girls end up in prostitution when human traffickers tempt them with work in the Middle East. For Mischa and Irina the future may mean a life in illegality in another country. But first they want to finish their university. 2008-04-12 Tiraspol, Transdniester. The old Lada is stil one of the most important modes of transport in Transdniester. Tiraspol is he capital of the breakaway province of Moldova. The nation declared itself a country, but is not recognised by anyother country or institution in the world.
