10-08-07 Islamabad Pakistan. A small madrasa in the Sufi holy place Golra Sharif close to Islamabad. This form of Islam is said to be the original Pakistani Islam. Nowadays the more conservative Arab Wahabism is becoming more popular. Around one third of the Pakistani youth is educated in Madrasas. For poor families it's a posibility for free education. But also richer families send their children often for a year to a koran school to learn about Islam. Madrasas are accused of recruiting and training memebers for Al Qaida or the Taliban. Most madrasas are just educational insitutes that distance themselves from extremism. For girls a madrasa can eaven mean a way to emancipation, because an education can help them with finding a job and financial independence.
