BIOGRAPHY
Di Gangi Ale (Nazca Pictures)
Ale Di Gangi was born in Firenze from a family where art has always been underrated though tangible thanks to many relatives on both sides - musicians, painters and glass-makers of fame, architets, poets and so on... After his classical studies Ale took a University Degree in English Language and Literature at the University of Florence. Before his interest in Photography became evident and was to be taken as a serious thing, Ale has done many other activities: sound and post-production engineer in a renown recording studio, Italian Language teacher for foreigners for various schools, graphic and web designer, recording label cofounder, music journalist, music writer/singer with his own band (releasing records on indie national and international labels), multimedia performer with his own poetry (also released in a book, anthologies and magazines) and so on. To present, he works as web designer/producer and project manager for a web leader company. Ale found out about his passion in photography in his mid-30s, even though - or better, just because - his father used to be a fine photographer. His first exhibition was a special performance of poetry/photography/ambient music held at the Pat-Pat Recorder and at the Centro Culturale in Bologna in1987; a video recording documenting the Pat-Pat night happening is in the archives of the Pecci Museum of Contemporary Art in Prato. Finding out about Lomo cameras and the whole concept of Lomographic photography was the event that somehow changed the way Ale looked at and approached photography. Lomography is not just about cameras, it’s more of a concept, a state-of-the-mind when you look - or choose not to – look through a camera viewfinder. As the Wikipedia on the web says (Ale has contributed to the Italian voice of the wikipedia on the issue): “Lomo was a (…) state-run optics company in St. Petersburg, Russia. (…) Lomography emphasizes casual photography. Accidents such as over-saturated colors, lens artifacts, and exposure defects are rehabilitated to produce swirly, abstract effects. (…) The Lomography motto of "don't think, just shoot" presumes spontaneity, close-ups and ubiquity, while deemphasizing formal technique. Typical Lomography cameras are deliberately low-fidelity, or inexpensively constructed.” Ale' concept of photography is thus resumable as a “quest" for exploded colour, blurred shapes and confusing figures, all mixed together. It goes without saying that there is no post-processing of the images, all is done when shooting and usually not much retouching is done afterwards. In 2003 one of Ale’ photos won the Bmw/Lomography Society official contest and was printed on the 2004 issue of the Bmw official Magazine. Some of his photos have also appeared (and still do) on some 2005 issues of Chiamata alle Armi (magazine of Art and Photography) and on various online and offline magazines such as Coolissimo.it, Jumper, Snaps Magazine, BendingLight, Digital LifeStyle and so on...
